A New Year is coming which means it’s time for both reflection and New Year’s resolutions. A New Year means new beginnings.
There are three times during the year that are perfect for starting new things; Spring as Nature begins to wake, Fall when the kids go back to a new school year, and of course, January as the New Year begins. Transitioning into a New Year is like opening a new bottle of essential oil. It is fragrant, filled with new possibilities, brimming with potential and an almost universal feeling of personal transformation.
Setting and achieving goals for the New Year involves nurturing character traits within yourself that will help to create goals and steps to achieve them. Essential oils can help you to create an environment and mindset essential to fulfilling New Year’s resolutions. Essential oils are more than just scent. They hold components within them that can help us to develop the traits that we seek in order for us to achieve success.
In today’s blog we’ll explore winter essential blends for setting and achieving New Year’s resolutions. From letting go of the past to cultivating courage, essential oils can fuel our journey of transformation and help provide for a fulfilling year ahead.
So, grab your cup’o’joy, and get ready to make some notes as we pave the way for determination, growth and unwavering commitment to becoming the person we want to be in the New Year.
Letting go of things and situations that are no longer helpful to us, and may also be harming us is often the first step in creating change. In order to make way for the new, you must clear out space and stagnant energy of the old. You can do this by decluttering your space, and donating items that you haven’t used over the past year.
You can also let go of negative influences by practicing forgiveness of both yourself and others. Often it is forgiveness of ourselves that is required, but when it is others that you need to forgive, spend some time in quietude actively forgiving the other person. Write down your thoughts on this. If you feel that something needs to be said, say it in a letter and then shred it. Once the letter is destroyed, work on forgiving the other person.
Letting go of unhelpful things can also be accomplished through smudging. Smudging allows you to clear negative energy around your environment. You can use sage, palo santo, sweet grass, or smudge spray to mist around your house, forcing negative energy to leave and inviting positive energy back into the space.
Great essential oils for letting go of what no longer serves you include many of the cooling oils which are helpful in cooling anxiety, stress and anger. Look to Roman and German chamomile, sweet orange, bergamot, geranium, grapefruit, melissa and lavender.
Spark the fire of personal transformation by brainstorming your journey toward change, not just the final outcome. Too often people create a resolutions such as, “this year I’m going to eat healthier”.
While that’s a great resolution, you won’t go very far without outlining the steps you will take to get there. What foods will you stop indulging in and which new foods will you substitute in? How long will you take to transform what you carry in your kitchen? How about creating a shopping list, and a few menu items? Is there a professional nutritionist that you can follow for recipe ideas?
Pick a few affirmations to repeat daily to help you change your mindset. You can grab a notebook from the Dollar Store to track your thoughts. Personally, I love to see plans written out on a large sheet of paper, where you can view your entire plan in one place.
Essential oils that are great for inspiration and brainstorming, clear the mind to allow for inspiration to flow. Look to sweet marjoram, clary sage, rosemary, tea tree, cardamom and lemon.
For every New Year’s resolution there is an underlying thought of wondering if we have the motivation to get it done. Sometimes we have to act more and think less to achieve our goals. That’s why the daily steps described above to achieving your goals is so important.
For example if our resolution is to reshape our body, it’s much more effective to change into our workout clothes in the morning before we leave the house and when it is time to go to the gym – just go. This can be difficult so when you are brainstorming the path to success as we discussed, include your reason why this goal is even a goal. Do you have an event to attend and you want to look your best?
When resolutions are particularly challenging, such as reshaping your body, I also find it is helpful to brainstorm something fun that will help you to reach your goal. Going to the gym allows me to listen to music for an hour. I love that time that has been set aside for the pure enjoyment of music.
I also love the sauna, so if I workout for an hour, I reward myself with a sauna when that is done. It’s almost like I go to the gym for the sauna and the workout happens because I am there. Funny though, the result of going to the sauna and working out because I’m at the gym is the same. I encourage you to pair something that you love with your goal.
Personal transformation takes time and with practice you will get there. It’s important to allow yourself to make mistakes along the journey. If you miss of month of learning that new language that’s ok. Just pick up your headphones and begin where you left off. Bill Gates was known to say that people often overestimate what we can do in one year and underestimate what we can do in (three) years.
Of course, there are essential oils to help us feel energized and motivated. Ginger, juniper berry, bergamot, cedarwood, grapefruit, orange and pine are excellent essential oils to get it done!
Many of our goals go unrealized due to fear of the unknown. There must be a way to create the courage within us that helps us to find success. And there is! Here are some suggestions to help you put fear behind you and continue to pursue your goal.
Do it with a friend. If you find an activity boring or daunting, ask a friend to do it with you. If you love a chat with your gal pals, go on a walk together to get more movement into your day.
Visualization is a great way to get over your fear of doing something. When you repeatedly visualize yourself doing an activity, it no longer feels like a new activity, taking fear of the unknown out of the equation.
Fear of failing affects many of us but can you fail if you are currently in the process of doing the thing? As Dora the fish says, “Just keep swimming.” Many goals are a process that take time to achieve. Allow yourself that time. Just keep doing it and forget about what anyone else thinks of your progress. As you continue towards your goal you will build resilience and determination.
Build courage with essential oils such as geranium, frankincense, sandalwood, myrrh, cardamom, thyme and cypress.
Your goals should be you, on a journey of personal growth. You are a valuable person with valuable and unique experiences that have made you who you are so far.
Pay attention to your self-talk and make sure to keep it positive. Yes you can do this. Yes you are worth this. Affirmations aimed at reinforcing that you are worthy of your goal and capable of getting there can be very helpful.
Pick an important person to you, whether that be a loved one or a favourite celebrity, and picture them telling you that you can do this. Yes it might be hard but very few things that are worth achieving in life are simple.
Where will you be a year from now if you start your goal right now? How will you feel when you look back on the year and know that you have made progress toward your goal, and most importantly, how would you feel right now if you were halfway to achieving your goal? Wouldn’t you have new knowledge, confidence, and the desire to keep going?
Create a worthy diffuser blend with essential oils of rosemary, rose, jasmine, neroli, cedarwood, pine, thyme, ginger and lavender.
At the end of the day, being successful with resolutions is largely about writing them down and creating a step-by-step plan to achieve them. While brainstorming is part of the success story, action is the other part. Make sure you can follow up on your dreams with action.
Wishing you the best of success with your New Year's Resolutions!
